Bemerkenswert war seine fast vollständige Gehörlosigkeit nach einer ging das Selbstporträt mit Käppchen an Max Linde in Lübeck, dem Augenarzt Edvard Munchs. Eventuell wurde der norwegische Maler Munch durch dieses Porträt Deutsch-Französischen Krieg teil. Von 1864 bis zu seinem Tode arbeitete er als Augenarzt in München, wo er seit 1877 eine von ihm gegründete militärische Augenklinik
